Star Wars. Whether you’re a fan or not, everybody knows the setting. Spread across the galaxy; exotic planets, cool spaceships, and most definitely, aliens. So, it wouldn’t be too hard to believe you could be playing as such in a Star Wars video game, right? Wrong.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the next chapter in the franchise from EA and Respawn Entertainment, launches multi-platform in November and its safe to say a lot of fans are pumped. Trailers and gameplay have given many a nerd tingles, across the galaxy. Not without the usual complaints though, but the development team is listening, making changes, and intends on keeping fans happy. Speaking of which, they’ve opted to keep the main character, Cal Kestis, a human so as not to ‘alienate’ people.
Stig Asmussen, the game’s director, recently spoke to GameInformer and stated; “Ultimately we didn’t go with an alien race because we felt like—no pun intended—that would alienate a lot of people.” This was decided to allow for a real human connection to the character, which in a way I guess I can understand, but I would personally have preferred a more imaginative protagonist to wield a lightsaber and follow on what I’m hoping to be a great story!
Due to the current movie arc with Rey being a lead, and female, Cal was chosen for the story of the game, as confirmed by Asmussen in the interview; “Rey was kind of the thing for Star Wars, and so it made a lot more sense for us to have a male protagonist.”
They seem to be playing it safe and sticking to what fans are already familiar with, again, personally, it could have been more fun to play as something with a little more imagination behind it. Being set in a fictional universe with over 20 million known species to choose from, it’s not as if it would have been hard to find one!
