Over the weekend Neill Blomkamp, of District 9 and Chappie fame, held a fairly informal Q&A via his twitter account where the subject of Robocop reared itself several times.
Blomkamp announced way back in July of last year that he was taking the helm for Robocop Returns, and in a wild twist the film will be a direct sequel to the original 1987 movie that will do away with earlier sequels and the not-very-well received 2014 reboot.
Given the direct link to the first movie fans were keen to get an idea of the direction of the look for the mechanical cop and in response to a fan asking if the original suit would be coming back Blomkamp was more than happy to respond with “1 million% original”. So, that’s a pretty solid yes.
Fans also seem keen for Peter Weller to reprise his iconic role as Alex Murphy after a slightly bizarre return to the character for a recent KFC commercial, but as he’s now 72 years old that might be stretching the fan service a little… or maybe they could borrow Marvels de-ageing tech?
Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate) is on script duties, with an estimated release of some point in 2021.
