Fox/Disney has signed up the seemingly quite busy Taika Waititi on an unannounced role for their Flash Gordon project, mentioning that it’s now to be an animated feature. The expectation would be for him to direct, and likely take a stab at the script given they’re hoping for him to “crack” the project.
Of course, the last time we got to see Flash Gordon on screen was in the now classic 80s movie starring Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless and Brian Blessed bellowing the now immortal line “GORDON’S ALIVE!!”. Good times.
After the colour-filled playfulness of Thor: Ragnarok he seems like an obvious choice to tackle the property. With its comic book origins and over-the-top otherworldly adventures.
An updated Flash Gordon is one of those Hollywood projects that seems to pop up every now and again with Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman, Kick-Ass) and Julius Avery (Overlord) rumoured to be attached in previous incarnations.

Waititi is right now finishing up work on Jojo Rabbit, a pretty bizarre sounding WW2 period film he’s directing and starring in as a young boy’s imaginary friend ‘Adolf Hitler’.
He’s also appearing in Ryan Renoylds GTA-inspired video game flick Free Guy. So yeah, keeping busy then.
