GuardianCon charity stream smashes donation goal

Ed Willey

This past week saw the annual GuardianCon charity stream take place, where streamers took it in turns to host 4 hour blocks on the GaurdianCon Twitch channel.

The goal this year was to raise $3 million, in an effort to beat last years total of $2.7 million, for St Jude’s children hospital in Memphis. The viewers went above and beyond with their support and ended up smashing last years total by a solid million ending on $3,721,097!

GuardianCon originally started as a Destiny meet up for streamers and their fans but quickly grew to be something bigger after more than a thousand fans turned up at their first event in a bar with a capacity of 250.

The charity stream precedes the convention by a couple of weeks and this year featured not one, but two record-breaking segments.

The highest ‘block’ on record is that of DrLupo, who last year notched up just over $350,000 in his 4-hour window. Destiny developers Bungie must have been taking notes as by the end of their segment last Thurs, they managed to rake in $400,000 in their first year of participation.

Not one to take things lying down, DrLupo had the very final segment of the week and as the donations came flying in from the off it became clear something special was happening.

Four and a half hours later, thanks to last-minute “bonus time”, DrLupos segment ended on a mammoth $920,343.98 thanks to the beautiful generosity of those watching, and leaving everyone involved quite stunned.

GuardianCon will be taking place in Orlando, Florida on 5th & 6th July.
